The right combination: Want to change challenging canine behaviour? Release stress first.

The first step most take with a problematic canine is jumping right to a behaviour modification program and/or skills applications process, when the reality is that a dog may not be in a state of learning due to distress or chronic/acute stress. The Canine Emotional Detox (CED) provides a step-by-step stress protocol, the right combination of elements and is focused on releasing stress first.

The Canine Emotional Detox differs from other books on stress because it focuses on the right combination of elements to reduce stress and to date has over 700 permission-based cases.

What does CED do?

  • Reduces behavior problems.
  • Enhances communication and relationships.
  • Neutralizes harmful stress chemicals causing distress or chronic/acute stress.
  • Takes into account the individual dog’s emotions and feelings.
  • Asks how is the dog coping with real life by uncovering patterns.
  • Explores how the dog. handles touch.
  • Shows how the dog thinks and processes information with mentally tiring activities.
  • Creates a productive, results-oriented behavior modification process.
  • Builds knowledge of the canine, their environment, their family.
  • Prepares the dog to learn better, faster and retain longer.

What expert are saying:

“Many behaviorists, veterinarians, and trainers who are asked to help solve behavior problems often feel the need to address the main concern immediately and do everything possible to ‘fix it’ as quickly as possible. Most of the time however, in cases of fear, anxiety, reactivity, or aggression, the dog is not in the right emotional state to begin learning new behaviours. By giving the dog an opportunity to learn how to relax, to release the physiologic stress that comes with chronic anxiety and aggression, and to study how each particular dog perceives and gains information from its environment, a specific behavior treatment plan can be created and formatted on an individual basis. Allowing the dog to reach a calmer emotional state will enable him to learn how to engage with his world more effectively, and to be rewarded for making positive choices in his reactions, creates a long-lasting, life-changing behavior process that will rebuild the relationships between the owners and their companion.” – Lynn Honneckman, DVM, Veterinary Behavior Solutions, Orlando, Florida, graduate Purdue University

Canine Confidential: Why Dogs Do What They Do

Canine Confidential: Why Dogs Do What They Do

by Marc Bekoff

ISBN: 9780226755694

Publisher: The University of Chicago Press

Publication Year:  2018

Format:  Trade Paperback

Pages:  271

From the back cover:

For all the love and attention we give dogs, much of what they do remains mysterious. Just think about different behaviours you see at a dog park: We have a good understanding of what it means when they wag their tails – but what about when they sniff and roll on a stinky spot? Why do they play tug-of-war with one dog, while showing their bellies to another? Why are some dogs shy, while others are bold? What goes on in dogs’ heads and hearts – and how much can we know and understand?

Canine Confidential has the answers. Rooted in the most up-to-date research on cognition and emotion and written by award-winning scientist – and lifelong dog lover – Marc Bekoff, it not only brilliantly opens up the world of dog behaviour but also helps us understand how we can make our dogs’ lives the best they can possibly be.

“With the discerning eye of a scientist and the compassionate heart of a dog lover, the incomparable Bekoff illuminates the mysteries of dog behaviour. Insights and surprises adorn every page of this wonderful book. But aside from being a great read, Canine Confidential offers deeper value: armed with fresh understanding of your dog’s senses, physiology, and mind, you’ll find fun ways to make your life together even more meaningful and rewarding for both of you.” – Sy Montgomery, author of The Soul of an Octopus

“Another thought-provoking, insightful manifesto from one of the most brilliant scientists of our time. Canine Confidential is a revolutionary perspective into the minds of our best friends, answering the questions everyone asks, as well as the questions no one has thought to ask. Well written, funny, and fascinating – you will never look at dogs the same way again.” – Brian Hare, coauthor of The Genius of Dogs

Hunting Together: Harnessing Predatory Chasing in Family Dogs through Motivation-Based Training

Hunting Together: Harnessing Predatory Chasing in Family Dogs through Motivation-Based Training

by Simone Mueller

ISBN:  9781659254129

Publisher:  Simone Mueller

Publication Year:  2020

Format:  Trade Paperback

Pages:  126

From the back cover:

“Do you wish your dog would listen to you on walks, rather than running after squirrels?

Tired of getting left in the dust if a cat shows up nearby?

Concerned that your dog’s prey drive is coming between the two of you?

Conventional training protocols stifle your dog’s natural predatory behaviours through punishing or constantly forcing them to return. These restrictive protocols work against your dog’s nature and against what they want most: to go for a hunt!

Predation is an inner need that makes your dog happy. Suppressing those natural urges is like putting an airtight lid on a boiling pot. Eventually, that pressure needs to escape, and without a proper outlet, it’s probably going to get messy.

Wouldn’t you rather use your dog’s predatory motivation to improve your training and even grow your relationship with your dog?

Predation Substitute Training (PST) is a motivation-based and need-oriented training program, designed to stop uncontrolled predatory chasing and to provide safe outlets for your dog’s natural drive.

Instead of making discipline the nagging factor that spoils the fun, this training system will help you grow as a team and go hunting together!

In this training manual, you’ll learn:

  • What is predation?
  • Why does your dog love to hunt?
  • Why is predatory behaviour so hard to interrupt?

To stop your dog’s predatory chasing and see real-life results, just follow the step-by-step instructions:

  • Preventions: Structure your walks to set your dog up for success.
  • Predation Substitute Tools: Help your dog control their urge to chase in a healthy way.
  • Predation Substitute Games: Discover new ways to express predatory energy in a safe, controlled environment.
  • Safety net: Build a strong ’emergency cue’ to immediately interrupt predatory chasing.”

Fear in Dogs: Theories, Protocols and Solutions

Fear in Dogs:  Theories, Protocols and Solutions

by Lynda Taylor, MSc

ISBN:  9781910488591

Publisher:  First Stone Publishing

Publication Year:  2020

Format:  Trade Paperback

Pages:  120

From the back cover:

“A dog can be fearful for many different  reasons but one thing is certain: unless help is forthcoming, both dog, and owner, are destined to a life of anxiety and compromise.

Unfortunately we cannot re-write. history and erase the hereditary factors, nor the social/environmental experiences, that have resulted in fearful responses. But we can address each situation, discover the triggers that lead to fearful behaviour and find a strategy that will, in time, give the dog a fresh outlook.

in Fear in Dogs, Lynda Taylor uses her extensive experience to give guidance to both owners of fearful dogs, and behaviourists who are working with clients. Beginning with the purpose and causes of fear in dogs, and its physiological basis, she then switches focus to the human side of the equation, and examines what part we play in either improving the situation or making it worse.

Drawing on research from leading practitioners, Lynda examines the training methods that can be used with fearful dogs, including desensitisation, counter conditioning and habituation, illustrating these with case histories and in-depth analysis. Lynda also outlines her own strategy, the targeted approach protocol (TAP) which has received international approbation.

Fear in Dogs concludes with a summary of psychopharmacological options and complementary therapies that can be used with fearful dogs, and, most importantly, there is a chapter devoted to ‘don’t go there’ techniques to steer both owners, and behaviourists, from the many pitfalls that may arise when working with fearful dogs.

Praise for Fear in Dogs

‘I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! It’s a very complete and easy to use resource for understanding and working with fearful dogs. From neuroscience to learning theory to hands-on training, Lynda offers such a comprehensive and well-done guide for both professionals and pet owners wanting to help their dog. Tons of useful case studies make the science come alive. You will find yourself returning to this book again and again.’ ~ Leslie McDevitt, MLA, CDBC, CPDT-KA, TAGteach, author of the Control Unleashed series”

Should I Spay or Neuter My Dog?: Understanding the Secret Life of Sex Hormones

Should I Spay or Neuter My Dog?:  Understanding the Secret Life of Sex Hormones

by Jane (Killion) Messineo Lindquist, Puppy Culture

Publisher:  Madcap University Press

Publication Year:  2018

Format:  Booklet

Pages:  38

From the inside front cover:

“Spaying and neutering are major surgeries that remove important organs, yet most pet owners agree to the procedure as a matter of course. Is that always the best choice? We wrote this booklet to help you decide.

Who Are You, Anyway?

The problem with almost all spay/neuter advice is that it’s almost never qualified based on the audience it’s intended to reach. The ‘correct’ advice will be VERY different based on the demographics and values of the pet owner. So, let’s be clear; I’m talking to people who are like our own puppy buyers. And our puppy buyers are the kind of people who’ll drive 5 miles out of the way to pick up dog treats made from grass-fed bison. The kind of people who have bath towels that are unraveling but will pay double for a dog bed because it’s made of organic cotton harvested in the U.S. The kind of people who will post immediately to Facebook the first time their puppy takes a nap with them. With a selfie. You know who you are.”
