From the Introduction:
“As people who train dogs, we need to know a lot. We need to know how to handle dogs, how to observe and interpret their behavior, how to communicate with them, how to live with them, how to care for them, how to play with them, and how to teach them. Most trainers learn various methods for teaching. Few think about why these methods work or don’t work in any given situation.
Almost everyone reading this book will know how to make a car operate: you can turn it on, make it move, make it stop, and so on. You might even be able to explain a bit about how a car is put together. But do you have the knowledge to fix the car if something goes wrong or if you want to change something it does? Most people would answer ‘no’ – that stuff is left to the auto mechanic. And without this knowledge base, you would never say you truly understand cars. Yet if you really wanted to get into cars, you would expect to learn all about how the engine works, how the drive train works, how everything is connected, and so on.
That’s the type of knowledge I’d like to provide you with, through this book. To really understand how a dog should be taught, you have to understand the underlying ‘machine’; the dog’s equipment for learning. Then, not only can you determine how best to teach your dog something, you can also understand why some methods work and some don’t for any particular behavior or any particular dog.”
